Once were Warriors by Alan Duff The text Once Were Warriors, compose by Alan Duff is a realistic and graphic novel. It is a moving portrayal of Maori society in the 1990s. This text is beta to me as I am part Maori, and dedicate openhanded up in a society similar to the i so thoroughly illustrated in the text. I can therefrom touch to some of the aspects that are highlighted and unfold in such a raw manner within the pages of this book. I was able-bodied to unify with some of the characters feelings as many of their characteristics resembled people I have known well in my life. The character Jake Heke was precise world-shattering to me, as he is the father of the Heke family in the text, and especially enough, he quite closely resembles my father. From the way his appreance is described- a well built, secure maori man, with piffling black hair, a p play out and his way of paseo with swag, to his personality- an intimidating and short tempered man, shy , but overly abusive, but caring underneath the exterior, all describe how many. including me, go through my father. Because of this connection I was able to relate to the children in the text, in the way they had to pretend around Jake (their father) as they were scared of him, and the consequences of stepping out of line.

A world-shattering event in the text which authentically got to me, was when Grace Heke pull suicide . It was a shock to me as I had travel interested in her as a character and I could relate a lot of what happened to her, to myself. Although a sad and desolate event, I found it ironic how her termination also helped the frate! rnity take a turn for the better, as they realised their life style was affecting their children. They needed to make a change. It also helped the partnership realise that although black and white were not yet equal, they shouldnt vex around and feel sorry for themselves, and that if they identify their minds to it, they could achieve anything, as they were of strong blood- warrior blood.
